I don’t usually blog about apps, but I think for the first time I’ve definitely found an app worth writing about.
Talkbox Voice Messenger.
A new and free application that you can easily download from the iTunes App Store, this simple application literally transforms your iPhone, iPod Touch and even your iPad, into a fully functional global walkie-talkie device, connecting you to every single person that also uses this app from your list of friends on Facebook, all over the world, free of charge.
The 2nd day into installing this application, I was already making “calls” by voice messaging my friends to make after-work plans. Just push to talk. It’s that simple. All you need is an internet connection, either via WiFi, or via your existing GPRS/EDGE/3G networks.
The app also allows you to share your location when you send out your voice messages. Just toggle the location sharing function on, and your voice message will be delivered with a map from Google Maps depicting the exact location the voice message was sent. Extremely useful for parents who want to track down their children, and… eh hem… wives or girlfriends who want to check on their husbands or boyfriends.
Another interesting thing worth mentioning is the Group Conversation functionality. Simply add up to 9 friends into a group, and all 9 of them will hear it loud and clear (and get irritated too), as you croak your national anthem loudly like nobody’s business, while stuck in your car in a traffic jam.
There are a few limitations to this app though. First, it is only limited to voice messaging and there are no ways for you to send a text message. Another thing is that it doesn’t allow you share files like audio or photos. So you may have to switch to apps like Bump or WhatsApp to share files, which could be quite a hassle to a number of iPhone users.
However, I think this is really not much of an issue, as this app is designed to “replace” text messaging in the first place, and it’s really very convenient for me especially when I’m driving. Unlike WhatsApp, which needs you to pre-record your voice message after navigating through a few menus, Talkbox just requires you to push to talk. And instead of battling with the iPhone touch screen keyboard and open myself to risks of being pulled-over by the cops or accidents, I can now easily and safely communicate with my friends with a touch of a button.
That also means, I won’t even have to do this anymore.
